Je n'eus pas de peine à céder aux prières de Peggotty, qui me demanda de rester à Yarmouth jusqu'à ce que les restes du pauvre voiturier eussent fait, pour la dernière fois, le voyage de Blunderstone. Elle avait acheté depuis longtemps, sur ses économies, un petit coin de terre dans notre vieux cimetière, près du tombeau de «sa chérie,» comme elle appelait toujours ma mère, et c'était là que devait reposer le corps de son mari.

Quand j'y pense à présent, je sens que je ne pouvais pas être plus heureux que je l'étais véritablement alors de tenir compagnie à Peggotty, et de faire pour elle le peu que je pouvais faire. Mais je crains bien d'avoir éprouvé une satisfaction plus grande encore, satisfaction personnelle et professionnelle, à examiner le testament de M. Barkis et à en apprécier le contenu.
