Book
The Republic of Plato
Plato · translated by B. Jowett
Socrates and his companions ask what justice is, and build in conversation the plan of a just city to find the answer.
The Republic is Plato's long dialogue on justice, in ten books. It covers the education of the city's guardians, the three parts of the soul, the rule of philosophers, the allegory of the cave, the decline of constitutions and the myth of Er. This is a separate edition of the work from the one published under the title The Republic.
This edition is the English translation by B. Jowett.

Republic I.ANALYSIS. BOOK I. The Republic opens with a truly Greek scene—a festival in honour of the goddess Bendis which is held in the Piraeus; to this is added the promise of an equestrian torch-race in the evening. The whole work is supposed to be recited by Socrates on the day after the festival to a small party, consisting of Critias, Timaeus, Hermocrates, and another; this we learn from the first words of the Timaeus.
