M. Utterson, l’avocat, était un homme de rude apparence; son visage ne s’éclairait jamais d’un sourire; il était froid, sobre et embarrassé dans ses discours, très réservé, maigre, long, poussiéreux, morne, et ayant malgré cela un certain fonds d’amabilité. Dans une réunion d’amis, et quand 2 le vin était à son goût, quelque chose d’éminemment humain éclairait ses yeux, quelque chose qui ne ressortait jamais dans sa conversation, mais qui se faisait sentir non seulement dans la face pleine de béatitude d’un homme qui vient de bien dîner, mais, le plus souvent et le plus fortement, dans les actions de sa vie. Il était austère pour lui-même, buvant du gin quand il était seul, pour mortifier son goût pour le vin. Et quoique aimant le théâtre, il y avait plus de trente ans qu’il n’avait franchi la porte d’aucune salle de spectacle. Mais il avait beaucoup d’indulgence pour les autres, s’étonnant, presque avec un sentiment d’envie, de leurs hauts faits, et au besoin plutôt enclin à leur venir en aide qu’à les blâmer. «Je tombe dans l’hérésie de Caïn,» disait-il bizarrement, «je laisse mes frères aller au diable comme ils l’entendent.» Alors il arrivait 3 souvent qu’il se trouvait être la dernière relation avouable et la dernière influence honnête de certains hommes dans leurs dégringolades. Et à ceux-là, aussi longtemps qu’ils le fréquentaient, il ne laissait jamais apercevoir même un soupçon de changement dans ses manières.
