Ce matin-là, la campagne anglaise offrait un aspect radieux. Sur une hauteur se dresse une masse imposante : c’est le château de Cholmondeley qui, avec ses tours antiques et ses murs revêtus de lierre, évoque le souvenir vivant de la féodalité du moyen âge. Ce château est une des nombreuses propriétés du duc de Rossmore, chevalier de la Jarretière, grand-croix de l’ordre du Bain, chevalier de Saint-Michel et Saint-Georges, etc., etc., etc. Le duc possède vingt-deux mille acres de terre en Angleterre, tout un quartier de Londres, soit environ deux mille maisons ; pour mener son honorable train de vie, il se contente d’un revenu annuel de deux mille livres. Le père et, en même temps, le fondateur de cette noble lignée, fut Guillaume le Conquérant en personne ; le nom de la mère est passé sous silence : cette dernière, étant la fille d’un modeste tanneur de Falaise, ne figure dans cette généalogie que comme personnage secondaire et sans importance.
